PRINTS RELEASE NOTES
1.0 Current contents
Release 39.0 of PRINTS contains 1950 entries, encoding 11,625 individual
motifs. Overall, the database is still relatively small, largely
because the detailed annotation of fingerprints is so time-consuming.
Nevertheless, the additional, unique information contained in PRINTS
makes this database a useful adjunct to PROSITE, Pfam, Blocks, etc..
PRINTS is released in major and minor versions: minor releases reflect
updates, bringing the contents in line with the current version of the
source database(s) (formerly, PRINTS was derived from OWL, but since
version 23.1, the database has changed to SWISS-PROT and TrEMBL sources);
major releases denote the addition of new material to the resource. We
endeavour to make major releases available quarterly.
1.1 Database growth
The database has gathered momentum since October 1993, from which time it
has shown a >10-fold increase in size. We used to maintain a steady growth
by adding around 50 new entries with each release, but this has proved
impossible in recent years. The database growth since its first release is
summarised below:

1.2 Future directions
We have now integrated PRINTS, PROSITE, profiles and Pfam within the
framework of a single protein family annotation resource; the annotation
server is based at the EBI, while the pattern databases continue to be
managed from their respective host institutions. This collaborative
European initiative, known as InterPro, aims to reduce duplication of
effort by streamlining the current annotation bottleneck.
InterPro is accessible at http://www.ebi.ac.uk/interpro/
