1. Get the maxdSetup.jar file...

Create a new folder called maxdSetup (perhaps in 'c:\Program Files\').

Download the current version of maxdSetup.jar into this directory.

Some web browsers (notably the latest version of Internet Explorer) will rename the file from 'maxdSetup.jar' to 'maxdSetup.zip' which will confuse matters no end. When you are saving the file, make sure you change the name back to 'maxdSetup.jar' before proceeding.

2. Make sure you have Java installed...

maxdSetup requires Java version 1.2.2 or better.

If you are lucky, Java will be already configured on your machine...

Double click on the maxdSetup.jar file. If the Installer starts then proceed directly to "Using maxdSetup".

If nothing happens when you double click on maxdSetup.jar, or if Windows asks you what to do with the file, then you will have to run it 'by hand'.

3. Locate the Java binary folder...

Open an MS-DOS command window. Type "java -version" at the command line. A response similar to "java version 1.2.2" means that Java has been found. A response along the lines of "Bad command or filename" means that Java cannot be found.

If Java cannot be found then either it is not installed, or it is not in the path. The path is a list of places that are searched when programs are needed. If Java is not in the path, then you will have to locate it manually.

The Java binary folder is the folder in which the important Java programs are found. This is the folder that you need to find.

The location of the Java binary folder depends on which Java environment you have installed. Normally it is in C:\Java or C:\Program Files\Java. Within this folder will be a folder called bin.

Sometimes the Java folder will contain a folder called jdk1.x or jre1.x. If either exists, the bin folder is likely to be found within it.

You can use the MS-Windows "Find" function to search for a file called java.exe. This file should be located in the Java binary folder.

If you are unable to locate the Java binary folder, then Java is not installed in your machine. Take a detour here.

Once you have located the Java binary folder, and confirmed that it contains a "java.exe" file, you are ready to proceed.

4. Start maxdSetup 'by hand'...

The application can be run directly from the JAR file in which it is distributed.

To run a Java program you need to know where the Java binary folder is (see above).

  • Go to the folder in which you have downloaded maxdSetup.jar

    C:\Windows> cd c:\"Documents and Settings\maxdSetup"

( substitute your chosen download folder for the red text )

  • Run java to start the application

    C:\Documents and Settings\maxdSetup> c:\java\jdk1.2.2\bin\java -jar maxdSetup.jar

( substitute the Java binary folder for the red text)

When the application starts, proceed to "Using maxdSetup".
